Worcester Flight Barr & Barr Plate, Dragon in Compartments, C. 1820

Description

A Regency Worcester porcelain plate from the Flight, Barr & Barr partnership, circa 1820. The fluted and scalloped form reflects earlier Worcester models of the 1765–1775 period. Decorated in the enduring Dragon in Compartments pattern with dragon and kylin in alternating panels divided by oriental objects. The palette and structure reflect Worcester’s long-standing interpretation of Kangxi famille verte prototypes.

Retaining a Flight Collection label, linking the piece to the Worcester collection assembled by Howard Emerson Flight, Lord Flight.

Dimensions: Diameter 21.7 cm; height 2.5 cm. Weight 323 g.

Condition: Antique condition. No restorations. There are underglaze cracks visible on the underside; on close inspection, they extend into the porcelain body. There is surface wear to the enamels and gilding consistent with age and use.

Regency Chinoiserie porcelain combined European ceramic techniques with European interpretations of East Asian art. Popularised during the early nineteenth century, this style featured vibrant enamel palettes, stylized fantastical creatures, and segmented compartment designs inspired by Japanese Imari and Chinese export wares.

Flight, Barr & Barr porcelain was crafted using a refined soft-paste porcelain body. The designs were meticulously hand-painted using mineral-based enamel pigments before being finished with honey gilding and fired in kilns to fix the decoration onto the glazed surface.

Authentic pieces often feature impressed factory marks such as FBB under a crown on the underside, alongside script painted marks. Additionally, genuine early nineteenth-century examples display precise hand-painted enamelling, soft translucency when held to light, and characteristic surface wear to the gilding.
