Helena Wolfsohn Dresden Chocolate Cup Trembleuse Augustus Rex C. 1870

19th century
Description

An elegant Dresden porcelain chocolate cup trembleuse by Helena Wolfsohn, c. 1870. The two-handled lidded cup sits securely within a high pierced trembleuse saucer, reflecting the historic chocolate service tradition of eighteenth-century Saxony.

The decoration combines Watteau-manner galant scenes and floral reserves within heavy gilt scroll cartouches. The deep black ground heightens contrast and emphasises the refined miniature painting. The scene panels are executed over a subtly textured ground resembling woven basketry.

The production of such complex trembleuse forms with extensive gilding and finely painted panels was costly, and pieces of this calibre were made for wealthy buyers and upper-class households, not for everyday use.

Underglaze blue AR-style mark with additional lettering to the base. A strong example of Dresden Augustus Rex revival production from one of the school’s most distinguished workshops.

Dimensions

Saucer with integrated trembleuse: diameter 14.5 cm, height 4.8 cm, weight 179 g.

Cup: height 11.5 cm, width 10 cm, depth 8 cm, weight 162 g.

Condition

Small chip to the floral finial on the cover. Minor rubbing to the gilding in places. The saucer shows some wear to the gilded surface. The circles and lines visible on the underside are areas of worn gilding rather than cracks. No cracks, breaks, or restorations observed under UV examination. Overall excellent antique condition.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging, and postage.
