Volkstedt Richard Eckert Large Porcelain Musician Figures C. 1894

Description

A striking pair of late 19th-century German porcelain figures produced by Richard Eckert & Co., Volkstedt. Standing at approximately 35 cm high, these are impressive decorative works executed in bisque porcelain with glazed bases.

The modelling is confident and expressive, and the painting of the faces and garments is refined and balanced. The figures represent the Rococo Revival taste popular in European interiors from the 1880s onward and continued under Richard Eckert & Co. after 1894.

There is also a suggestion that the composition reflects 19th-century Faust and Gretchen imagery within the broader artistic tradition inspired by Goethe.

Both figures bear the underglaze blue Volkstedt mark of Richard Eckert & Co. and the incised number “30”.

Founded in 1762 in Thuringia, Germany, Volkstedt is recognised as one of the earliest porcelain manufactories in the region. The manufactory gained international renown for its finely modelled, hand-painted porcelain figurines depicting pastoral, musical, and aristocratic subjects.

These figures were sculpted from fine hard-paste porcelain clay and fired at high temperatures to achieve a vitreous body. Skilled artisans applied overglaze enamel colours and gold leaf accents by hand prior to a secondary firing.

Authentic items feature underglaze factory marks, such as a crown above an N or a pitchfork symbol, alongside impressed mould numbers on the base. Look for crisp hand-painted details, precise facial feature work, and age-appropriate wear on the unglazed foot rims.
