Peter Harris Clocks & Militaria has dated this Scottish Flintlock Pistol to the 18th Century.
The grip is fitted with an oval silver wrist cartouche engraved with the initials “AB,” likely representing a period owner’s monogram. The barrel and mounts retain clear decorative engraving, and the pistol measures approximately 32 cm overall length.
Doune, near Stirling, was the principal centre of Highland pistol manufacture during the 18th century, producing the distinctive all-metal pistols traditionally carried as part of Highland dress. John Campbell is recorded among the gunmakers working in Doune during the mid-18th century.
A well-executed and attractive example of a classic Doune Highland pistol, retaining its distinctive form and decorative detail.
Collectors Note
Scottish arms, pistols from the period immediately after the 1745 Jacobite rising are especially interesting historically, as they represent the continuation of the Highland pistol tradition during a time of major change in Highland society.
Pistols of this type were traditionally carried in the belt as part of Highland dress and served as personal arms, sometimes referred to as Highland fighting or belt pistols.
