Joseph Egg London Cased Saw-handled Percussion Target Pistol, Circa 1825–1835
£1,800 $2,432 €2,072
A good original example of a cased English saw-handled percussion target pistol by Joseph Egg of London, dating from the early 19th century, circa 1825–1835.
The pistol has a long octagonal steel barrel signed in gold “J. Egg London”, with engraved percussion lock marked “Joseph Egg” and fitted with a finely shaped hammer. The walnut stock is formed with the characteristic saw-handle target grip, chequered for hold and terminating in a white metal butt cap. It retains its under-barrel ramrod and shows the proportions typical of London target pistols of the period.
Presented in a fitted mahogany case with red baize lining and trade label for Joseph Egg & Sons, Gun, Rifle and Pistol Manufacturers, Piccadilly, London, together with accessories including powder flasks and bullet mould. A handsome and well-balanced early Victorian target pistol by one of London’s respected gunmakers.
