18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality 18th Century George III Period Mahogany Floorstanding Double Corner Cabinet, Or Corner Cupboard, Retaining Good Colour And Patina Throughout, Having Step Moulded Cornice To Top, Over Pair Of Thirteen Pane Astragal Glazed Doors, Enclosing Two Elegant Shaped Shelves To Top, And Well Figured Pair Of Cockbeaded Panelled Doors Below, Enclosing One Fixed Shelf, Raised On Original Plinth Base.

Corner cupboards, or cabinets, dependent on whether their doors are glazed or not, are the perfect answer for those looking to add a different perspective to a room, or add practical storage to a room when they have no conventional space left to position furniture in.

This corner cabinet was constructed towards the end of the 18th century using good quality and well figured mahogany, which has retained an attractive colour. It is also of double door design which gives it a little more presence and importance, as well as offering more versatility and practicality when taking objects in and out of it.

It retains its original plinth and comes with fully functioning locks and key. The majority of the glazing appears to be original and the astragal decoration is very well executed, creating a typically elegant georgian look.

As with all of the items which we offer for sale this corner cabinet has been attended to in our workshops by our skilled restorers and lightly cleaned plus naturally waxed in the traditional fashion, ensuring that it is ready to be placed immediately into the home for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian furniture design, spanning from 1714 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, high-quality timber such as mahogany, and architectural influence drawn from Palladian and Chippendale motifs.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid and veneered mahogany, featuring pine or oak as secondary back woods, alongside hand-blown glass panes and cast brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian examples display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn backboards with irregular tool marks, astragal moulding secured with historic putty, and original hand-cut iron or brass screws.

A double corner cabinet efficiently utilises unused architectural space, providing upper display for contemporary ceramics or glassware while offering hidden lower storage for modern living necessities.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish annually, maintaining placement away from direct heat sources and sunlight to protect the original finish.
