1900 - 1920
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

A good size miniature carriage clock with beautiful 'mock' tortoise shell case. The classic Art Nouveau inspired carry handle, hinge, bun feet and bezel are all solid silver. The hallmarks on the handle and hinge tell us that it was made by William Comyns Silversmiths of  London, in 1908. The case is in good condition with a slight crack to the rear door (which has been repaired) The enamel dial is in excellent condition with only a hairline at the 4 o'clock position, delicate hands and Roman numerals. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian tortoiseshell timepiece is a portable domestic clock crafted during the early 20th century, characterised by a natural shell casing fitted with precious metal mounts, typically sterling silver.

These timepieces feature a carved tortoiseshell body, sterling silver or nickel mounts, a glass crystal lens, a white enamel dial, and an internal brass mechanical clock movement.

Authentic pieces carry British sterling silver hallmarks, including the sponsors mark for William Comyns, city assay marks such as London, date letters, and precise silver joinery around the tortoiseshell core.

A small clock works as a focal point on a curated bookshelf, an office desk, or a bedroom nightstand alongside leather-bound books and understated metal accents.

Keep the casing away from direct sunlight, central heating, and excess moisture to prevent warping or drying of the shell, and dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth.
