Description:
This is a fine quality small antique English Victorian oil painting of a hound dog and her litter, attributed to Samuel Raven, circa 1800, in excellent original condition. This is a most interesting and delightful study of a hound and her litter attributed to Samuel Raven. The hound is reputed to be called ''Lady'', owned by Sir Thomas Mostyn.
... This dog appears in several of Samuel Raven’s works.
This oil painting, which is painted directly onto an oak panel, is extremely well painted and sits within its original fine quality ornate gilt frame, which is also in excellent condition. Five pups straddle playfully at the feet of their mother; the pup in the foreground is captivated by a spider it has spotted in the straw. The left side of the Samuel Raven painting reveals a window in the stable, whilst the background is dark; this enhances the black and tan of the hounds.
This Samuel Raven painting is authenticated by the fine craquelure in the paint application, seen in background. Craquelure is a reaction to the paint application when applied directly onto an oak board; it does not detract from the value. Samuel Raven was patronised by the Duke of Clarence and you can see same paint effect in the portrait of his wife, Adelaide. He was a firm favourite of Queen Victoria; his paintings are rare and highly sort after today. Samuel Raven’s paintings were small and full of detail; usually painted on a panel. Samuel Raven lived between 1775 to 1847; his work was rarely signed.
The Samuel Raven painting would look superb in a variety of rooms, including the hallway, living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is an attractive and colourful piece. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely picture.
