Description:

This is a fine quality small antique English Victorian oil painting of a hound dog and her litter, attributed to Samuel Raven, circa 1800, in excellent original condition. This is a most interesting and delightful study of a hound and her litter attributed to Samuel Raven. The hound is reputed to be called "Lady", owned by Sir Thomas Mostyn. This dog appears in several of Samuel Raven’s works.

This oil painting, which is painted directly onto an oak panel, is extremely well painted and sits within its original fine quality ornate gilt frame, which is also in excellent condition. Five pups straddle playfully at the feet of their mother; the pup in the foreground is captivated by a spider it has spotted in the straw. The left side of the Samuel Raven painting reveals a window in the stable, whilst the background is dark; this enhances the black and tan of the hounds.

This Samuel Raven painting is authenticated by the fine craquelure in the paint application, seen in background. Craquelure is a reaction to the paint application when applied directly onto an oak board; it does not detract from the value. Samuel Raven was patronised by the Duke of Clarence and you can see same paint effect in the portrait of his wife, Adelaide. He was a firm favourite of Queen Victoria; his paintings are rare and highly sort after today. Samuel Raven’s paintings were small and full of detail; usually painted on a panel. Samuel Raven lived between 1775 to 1847; his work was rarely signed.

The Samuel Raven painting would look superb in a variety of rooms, including the hallway, living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is an attractive and colourful piece. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely picture.

Condition Report:

The oil on board panel is in excellent original condition – the picture display strong colours. This Samuel Raven painting is authenticated by the fine craquelure, in the paint application, seen in background. Craquelure is a reaction to the paint application when directly painted onto a board; it does not detract from the value. The ornate gilt frame is original and also in excellent condition. Nominal old age marks and wear to the leading edges of the gilt frame, but nothing significant, considering the age of the item. The back of the frame incorporates the original board and hanging string.

Georgian sporting art refers to paintings produced in Great Britain between 1714 and 1837 that capture field sports, livestock, horses, and working dogs. These works emphasize anatomical accuracy, naturalistic rural settings, and the specific characteristics of individual breeds favored by the landed gentry.

Painters during this period commonly applied oil-based pigments onto linen canvas, wood panels, or millboard. Frames were typically crafted from carved timber or moulded composition material covered in real gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period paintings show natural age-related craquelure across the paint layer, timber oxidation on the stretcher or panel reverse, and evidence of original joinery techniques. Period giltwood frames often exhibit cast composition detailing with historic gilding wear.

Small antique oil portraits function well integrated into a layered gallery wall or displayed on dark timber cabinetry alongside contemporary ceramics. Placing traditional gilded frames against bold or muted paint shades provides visual contrast.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, open flames, and rapid humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently with a dry, soft brush and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning or restoration.
