Pair French Candelabras Gilt Marble Louis Xvi Revival 1890

19th century
Description

A fine and decorative pair of French ormolu and white marble candelabra, richly cast in the Louis XVI taste

Bought from a dealer on Marche Biron at the Paris antiques markets

Circa 1890

In great shape and we can ship to anywhere in the world

Each piece is centred by a classical urn-shaped white marble body, mounted with gilt bronze ram’s head handles and delicate floral rosettes to the front

The urns taper elegantly to a circular socle and square plinth base, trimmed with ormolu mouldings for a refined architectural finish

Above, the gilt bronze branches rise in sweeping, asymmetrical foliate scrolls, issuing three candle arms with tulip-form sconces and drip pans. The scrolling arms intertwine in a dynamic, ribbon-like movement, richly chased with acanthus leaves and naturalistic detailing, creating a sense of fluidity and balance

The contrast between the crisp white marble and the warm gilded bronze gives the pair a strong neoclassical presence, while the exuberant scrolling branches hint at late 19th century French revival craftsmanship

A striking and sculptural pair, ideal for a mantelpiece, console table, or flanking a mirror in a classical interior

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI Revival candelabras, popular in the late 19th century, draw design inspiration from classical antiquity, incorporating symmetrical forms, urn shapes, acanthus leaf motifs, and structured architectural bases.

These decorative items were predominantly crafted using cast gilt bronze (ormolu) or brass combined with carved white or coloured marble to create visual contrast and weight.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-chased metal castings, natural surface oxidisation or mercury gilding, threaded structural rod assemblies, and solid marble pedestals.

Placing a pair symmetrically on a modern sideboard, marble mantelpiece, or long dining table provides architectural height, metallic contrast, and classical balance to modern decor.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can strip original gilding or damage porous marble surfaces.
