Grand Antique English Inlaid Mahogany Letters Box C.1890

Description

A grand quality example quite obviously from a smart London hotel, private club or magnificent private residence.

Dating to around 1890, late Victorian in period, these table top letter boxes were used to collect the outgoing mail by a member of staff to take to the post office for mailing .. those civilized days!!

The top is beautifully inlaid, fan inlays on each corner and an inlaid panel spelling out " LETTERS " around the slot where the mail would be deposited. The brass fittings have all been meticulously & professionally cleaned to gleam, including the Bramah lock, a true sign of quality.

The top has a thick bevelled glass panel protecting the clearance schedule, complimenting the thick bevelled glass panel to the front, this is here so staff could see if there was any post to be collected.

In superb condition complete with working key, the footprint measures 12 1/2" x 7 1/2"; the box standing 9" tall at rear.
