Rare Bow Porcelain Figure of Winter the Seated Rustic Seasons C.1765

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A fine Bow porcelain figure depicting Winter from the series "The Seated Rustic Seasons". A hooded gentleman sat on a log warming his hands over a brazier, set on a raised, scrolled base, applied with small, berried shrubs. Decorated in lovely light and bright enamels, highlighted with gilding. Marked with a small anchor and dagger to one side of the base, c.1765.

Reference: Bow Porcelain Figures by Bradshaw, figure 208.

It measures 16.5cm (6 1/2") high and 11cm (4 1/4") wide and 9cm (3 1/2") deep.

In excellent condition with no damage or repairs. Some very minor professional restoration to the outer edge of one of the back feet. From manufacture, some very fine hairlines to the base, only superficial and due to the thickness of the clay and minor stress contractions during firing. Very minor handling wear to both enamels and gilding; a lovely example.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century English allegorical porcelain figures are small decorative sculptures representing abstract concepts such as the Four Seasons, the Elements, or Virtues through human personification. Produced by prominent manufactories like Bow, Chelsea, and Derby, these pieces blend Rococo design sensibilities with classical symbolism.

Early Bow porcelain was crafted using a soft-paste porcelain body that incorporated bone ash, which gave the material strength and a distinctive cream-white translucency. These figures were fired, decorated by hand using overglaze enamel colours, and finished with burnished gold leaf highlights.

Authentic pieces from this period display characteristics such as unglazed foot rims, slight firing imperfections, soft-paste body translucency under light, and hand-painted enamel details. Collectors also examine factory marks, such as incised anchors, daggers, or painters marks on the base.

A porcelain statuette can be styled within a glass display cabinet, placed atop a mantelpiece, or integrated into a curated vignette alongside books and modern art. Positioned individually, it serves as a historical focal point against neutral or dark backdrops.

Dust porcelain figures regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to prevent buildup in intricate mouldings. Avoid immersing early soft-paste porcelain in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as these can damage overglaze enamel decoration and gilding.
