The Antique Clock Co. has dated this French Lighthouse Automaton Clock to the Victorian era.
Silvered dial with painted Roman numerals, and original matching blued steel hands. At the base of the lighthouse, there is a second movement that drives the rotating top of the lighthouse for a few hours, revealing an aneroid barometer with a similar silvered dial that opposes the clock. To the sides of the drum are two thermometers, one reading Fahrenheit and the other Centigrade, both with silvered register plates.
The case is of all-brass construction sitting on a black slate base. These clocks appear on the market with different surface finishes, some gilded, silver-plated, silvered, and some of natural brass. This example shows no evidence of ever being gilded or silver plated, and so the case has been lightly polished and then lacquered to protect from fingerprints. The drum has been silvered, which is in keeping with traces of the original silvering.
