Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after Prince Albert, the Albert chain became popular during the Victorian era as a functional accessory to secure a pocket watch to a waistcoat. The T-bar inserted through a waistcoat buttonhole, while the swivel clasp held the timepiece, often balanced by a decorative fob or wax seal on a secondary drop chain.

Victorian watch chains were constructed from solid gold, silver, or rolled gold, a process where a sheet of gold was mechanically fused to a base metal core. Links ranged from curb and anchor designs to elongated wire links, secured with hand-assembled swivel clasps and spring rings.

Authentic pieces often feature period-specific clasps, such as swivel hooks with internal steel springs, alongside T-bar attachments. Rolled gold items may display slight surface wear at high-friction points showing the underlying base metal, and lack modern hallmark stamps, sometimes bearing maker marks or gold shell indicators instead.

While originally designed for waistcoats, antique watch chains are frequently repurposed in modern wardrobes as choker necklaces or layered chain pendants. Decoratively, they are often displayed atop valet trays, framed within shadow boxes, or draped over vintage jewellery stands.

Clean rolled gold gently using a soft microfibre cloth and mild soapy water, taking care not to submerge fob stones like bloodstone or carnelian, which may be foil-backed or set with delicate adhesives. Avoid chemical dip cleaners and abrasive polishes that can strip the thin gold layer.
