Dutch provincial jewellery refers to regional ornaments produced predominantly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as part of traditional local dress across various provinces in the Netherlands. Multi-strand coral necklaces fitted with elaborate gold or silver clasps were characteristic status symbols within these communities.

These necklaces were constructed using natural Mediterranean red or orange coral beads strung on thread, paired with gold or silver filigree clasps. The metal clasps frequently feature detailed wirework, granulation, and engraved plaque details unique to specific Dutch districts.

Authentic period coral displays natural colour variations, faint growth structures, and subtle surface irregularities rather than synthetic uniformity. Antique clasps usually exhibit historical regional hallmarks, hand-fabricated filigree work, and period-appropriate closure mechanisms.

While intended as wearable jewellery, historic provincial necklaces are frequently displayed in shadow-box frames lined with linen or mounted on velvet jewelry stands inside glass vitrines to serve as decorative cultural artefacts.

Natural coral requires gentle handling and should be kept away from harsh chemicals, perfumes, and direct heat. Cleaning should be performed with a soft, slightly damp cloth, avoiding immersion in water or chemical chemical cleaning fluids.
