Japanese Calligraphy Writing Table

19th century
Description

A fabulous Japanese calligraphy writing table crafted from Keyaki, the highly prized Japanese elm known for its striking grain and exceptional durability. The piece is in excellent antique condition and retains a wonderful depth of colour and patina. The table features three smooth-running drawers, each fitted with its original metal handle. As with all genuine working pieces, there are small age-related imperfections, but it remains a solid, beautifully made table with superb graining throughout. One drawer carries historic ink staining, a charming and authentic reminder of its original calligraphic use. This is a characterful and functional piece with strong decorative appeal. In a modern interior it works perfectly as a low table, display stand, or accent piece in a living room or study. Whatever the setting, it stands as a true collector’s item for anyone who appreciates Japanese craftsmanship and traditional woodworking.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically known as a fudako or terakoya desk, a Japanese calligraphy writing table is a low-standing surface designed for use while sitting on a floor mat or tatami. These tables served scholars and students for writing, practising calligraphy, and storing brushes or inkstones within integrated drawers.

These tables are crafted from native Japanese timbers such as keyaki, chestnut, or cedar. Construction typically relies on traditional joinery techniques without steel nails, complemented by hand-forged iron drawer pulls and protective lacquer or oil finishes.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, natural wear consistent with floor usage, and original iron bail handles. Surface oxidisation on metal hardware, subtle hand-planing marks on wooden panels, and age-related shrinkage in drawers indicate genuine historical manufacture.

A Japanese calligraphy desk functions as a low coffee table, accent display bench, or compact media stand in contemporary interiors. Its low height and clean silhouette allow it to fit beneath low windows or alongside floor cushions in minimalist living spaces.

Dust the timber surface regularly with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays or excess water. Position the piece away from direct radiators and sunlight to prevent timber movement, and apply a neutral beeswax polish periodically to protect the patina.
