Antique George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers C.1790

18th century
Description

A George III mahogany chest of drawers, the solid mahogany top with moulded edge above four long graduated drawers retaining a warm, even colour and fitted with brass swan-neck handles, all raised on original ogee bracket feet.

A practical, understated chest with a classic Georgian silhouette and a conveniently modest footprint.

Very good antique condition with light surface wear consistent with age, later brass handles, original backboards historically reinforced for stability and an old, well-settled grain-line repair to one drawer front. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1790.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III furniture, spanning from 1760 to 1820, is defined by clean lines, classical proportions, and the extensive use of imported mahogany. Design evolved from early robust Chippendale forms to lighter Hepplewhite and Sheraton styles, emphasizing balance, refined joinery, and practical utility.

Primary timbers were predominantly high-grade West Indian mahogany or walnut, while secondary woods like pine or oak were used for drawer linings and back panels. Hand-cast brass hardware, including swan-neck drop handles and keyhole escutcheons, provided functional ornamentation.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn drawer bottoms, hand-cut dovetail joints of varying sizes, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Look for secondary wood species on internal linings, authentic wear around keyholes and handles, and undisturbed original patination on wood surfaces.

Position the piece against neutral or deeply painted walls to accentuate the rich mahogany grain. Balance the traditional aesthetic by pairing it with contemporary artwork, clean-lined table lamps, or modern sculptural objects on the top surface.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, buffing gently to maintain the patination. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping or veneer lifting, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels.
