Fine Napoleonic Period French Flintlock Blunderbuss Pistol by La Motte, Circa 1795–1805

18th century
Description

A scarce and attractive Napoleonic period French flintlock blunderbuss pistol measuring 8.5 inches overall with a 4.25 inch two-stage cannon barrel flared at the muzzle to .86 inches.

The lock signed La Motte A Armes and retaining its original flintlock mechanism in full working order. The form of the lock, cock and barrel profile place the pistol firmly within the Revolutionary / early Empire period.

The finely figured walnut stock is of exceptional quality and retains its original finish, enhanced with delicate gold wire inlay of refined late 18th century taste. The inlay remains crisp and intact. Mounted entirely in steel with correct period furniture including cannon-form sideplate and rounded steel butt cap.

A well-balanced and elegant private purchase defensive pistol of the Napoleonic era, almost certainly intended for civilian or officer use.

An increasingly difficult form to find in such honest and untouched condition.

Circa 1795–1805.

Condition Paragraph

The pistol is in full working order. The barrel retains a consistent aged surface with strong muzzle definition. The lock functions correctly. The stock remains sharp with no evidence of sanding or refinishing and retains its original gold wire inlay. All mounts appear original and undisturbed. A very sound and authentic example.

Measurements

Overall length 22.5cm

Barrel 10.4cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Flintlock blunderbuss pistols were short-barrelled firearms featuring a flared muzzle designed to scatter shot at close range, widely utilised during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

These firearms typically feature carved walnut stocks, forged steel lock mechanisms, and brass or steel flared barrels with iron fittings.

Authentic examples display period-appropriate maker marks or arsenal stamps, natural oxidisation on metallic components, hand-cut screw heads, and correct flintlock lockplate configurations.

Such historic items are commonly displayed mounted in custom glazed shadow boxes or set upon bespoke display stands within a library or study.

Preservation requires keeping the item in a humidity-controlled environment, regularly applying microcrystalline wax to metal and wooden elements, and avoiding abrasive polishes.
