Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kyoto stoneware produced during the Meiji period (18681912) is recognised for its complex enamelling, heavy gilding, and raised relief work. Artisans frequently depicted mythical creatures, birds of prey, and floral landscapes to appeal to both domestic collectors and the expanding Western export market.

These vessels were formed from dense stoneware clay and decorated using polychrome overglaze enamels. Craftsmen applied a technique known as moriage to create three-dimensional raised slip outlines, finished with detailed paintwork and burnished gold accents before firing.

Authentic pieces display precise hand-painted detail, natural age-related crazing in the glaze, and wear to exposed foot rims. Look for crisp slip relief, multi-layered enamel depth, and period-appropriate maker marks or signatures impressed or painted on the base.

A substantial Kyoto stoneware vase functions effectively as a focal point on a credenza, mantlepiece, or central dining surface. Placing the piece against a neutral background allows the detailed polychrome enamelling and relief work to stand out without competing with surrounding decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush to clear intricate relief areas without snagging. Avoid liquid cleaners, immersion in water, or harsh chemical detergents, as these can lift fragile gilding and damage vintage overglaze enamels.
