Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Corbels are structural or decorative brackets projecting from a wall, historically designed to support heavy architectural elements like mantels, cornices, or beams. In Georgian and Victorian architecture, timber corbels were frequently hand-carved with ornamental motifs such as acanthus leaves and scrollwork.

Antique corbels were predominantly hand-carved from dense hardwoods like oak, walnut, or pine, as well as cast from stone or plaster. Craftsmen carved these pieces from solid timber blocks using chisels and gouges, often finishing them with wax, varnish, or paint.

Authentic antique corbels feature hand-tool marks, irregular symmetry consistent with hand-carving, and natural signs of age such as shrinkage cracks or wood grain wear. They also typically show dark oxidisation in crevices and historical mounting holes on the uncarved reverse or top face.

Antique corbels can be mounted as decorative shelf supports beneath a fireplace mantel, kitchen shelving, or a display ledge. Alternatively, they can be displayed as standalone architectural sculptures on a console table or mounted directly onto a focal wall.

Clean carved timber using a soft dry brush to remove dust from intricate relief work without scratching the surface. Apply a high-quality clear beeswax sparingly every few years to nourish the wood and protect the original patina, keeping the items away from extreme moisture or direct heat sources.
