George II Feather Banded Walnut Lowboy with Three Drawers, Circa 1780

18th century
Description

An elegant George II walnut lowboy dating to circa 1780, of refined proportions and pleasing colour throughout. The rectangular top displays attractive feather banding, above a configuration of three drawers fitted with original brass swan-neck handles and shaped escutcheons.

The drawer fronts show beautifully figured walnut veneers, framed by fine crossbanding, all retaining a rich, warm patina developed over time. Below, the shaped apron is raised on slender cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, lending the piece its light and graceful stance.

Well constructed and well proportioned, this lowboy would have originally served as a dressing or occasional table and remains eminently practical today. Ideal for use in a bedroom, hallway or drawing room, it offers both useful storage and classic Georgian elegance.

A particularly appealing example of late 18th century English walnut furniture, combining understated decoration with excellent colour and surface.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George II walnut lowboy is an 18th-century table fitted with drawers, originally designed in Britain to function as a dressing table or side table, characterized by cabriole legs and decorative timber veneers.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid timber carcasses veneered in figured walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass drop handles, and intricate feather-banding inlays.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-sawn drawer linings, original brass backplates with split pins, period-correct wood shrinkage, and natural patination across the walnut grain.

A walnut lowboy functions effectively as an entryway console table, a compact bedroom dressing table, or an accent side table in a formal living space paired with contemporary artwork.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer lifting.
