Set of Six Regency Mahogany Bar Back Dining Chairs with Reeded Legs, Circa 1820

19th century
Description

A handsome and elegant set of six Regency period mahogany dining chairs dating to circa 1820. Of classic bar back form, the chairs feature beautifully shaped top rails with subtle scroll terminals, supported by gently tapering uprights and a finely moulded mid rail.

The seats are generously proportioned and recently upholstered in a smart, neutral velvet with brass stud detailing, providing both comfort and a refined decorative finish. Raised on turned and reeded front legs with ring turned collars, the chairs display excellent proportion and a strong architectural presence typical of the Regency period. The rear legs sweep gracefully backwards, giving the set a light and elegant stance.

The mahogany has a rich, warm tone with an attractive depth of colour and good surface throughout. Solid, sturdy and ready for use, this is a well-balanced and versatile set that would sit beautifully around a Regency, Georgian or contemporary dining table.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency bar back dining chairs are characterized by horizontal top rails positioned over vertical uprights with parallel mid-rails. Originating in early 19th-century Britain, this style reflects neoclassical influence through crisp, linear proportions and restrained wood carving.

Pieces from this era were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or rosewood, joined with traditional mortise and tenon wood joints. Seats were historically stuffed with horsehair and supported by webbed frames before upholstery was applied.

Authentic period chairs display hand-cut joinery, crisp hand-carved reeding or fluting, and natural wear patterns on lower rungs and legs. Original timber will show minor shrinkage marks and dark oxidation consistent with two centuries of age.

These classic chairs pair effectively with minimalist modern dining tables, creating a balanced juxtaposition of historical detail and clean lines. Reupholstering the seats in neutral linen or textured velvet easily bridges period design with modern interior schemes.

Keep wooden surfaces clean by wiping with a dry microfiber cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Position chairs away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading.
