Superb Italian Watercolour After Correggio

19th century
Description

A superb watercolour painting after the original work ‘The mystic marriage of Saint Catherine’ by Correggio. The painting is beautifully created in exquisite detail and heightened with gum Arabic. The original painting is held in The Louvre and It has often been a source of inspiration to artists, in the 19th century it was copied by Louis Gustave Ricard, and several times by Fantin-Latour. The colours are bright and true and the whole is in very good condition. The reverse shows that the work was created in Rome but the artist’s name is somewhat illegible. The painting was most likely purchased in Italy and framed in England. The superb gilt frame is the original and retains the original gilding with just some minor areas of restoration. The whole is an excellent example of this type of Grand Tour work and has a wonderful country house look. C.1880.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In art terminology, after indicates that the painting is an authentic period copy or artist interpretation created following an original composition by an established master.

These works typically utilised finely ground pigments dissolved in water applied to paper or vellum, housed within hand-carved pine or lime wood frames finished with gesso and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural ageing to the paper, slight oxidisation of pigments, genuine wear to the gilded gesso surface, and hand-fitted wood joinery rather than modern mechanical backing.

A classical religious watercolour functions well when hung within a curated gallery wall, placed in a reading nook, or positioned above an entry console table to contrast against clean architectural lines.

Keep the painting away from direct light and damp conditions to avoid fading and paper foxing. Dust the gilded frame carefully using a soft dry brush without applying liquid polish or water.
