Oil Painting Titled ‘grateful Warmth’ By Walter Farmer 1870-1947

A charming oil on artist board depicting a man warming his hands by the fire, painted by the artist Walter Farmer 1870-1947. The work is wonderfully detailed with superb work on the figure and the light cast by the fire. The piece is in very good condition just a slight concave bow to the board. The painting is signed and dated to the lower right 1899. Walter Farmer was born in Nottingham and worked all his life in the lace trade. He took up painting as a hobby and was entirely self-taught developing a very insightful and clever style. He was a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists for many years. He worked chiefly in oils and one of his works titled ‘The Stockinger’ was purchased for the permanent collection of the Nottingham Castle Art Gallery in 1911. Many of his works were interior scenes, like this example, influenced by Dutch painting. He had many works exhibited at The Royal Academy and was a regular exhibitor there from 1909-1920.
