1900 - 1920
Description

1918, Jules Rambo, ‘Distinguished Gentleman’ Framed Oil on Canvas, Signed and Dated (Belgian).

Signed 'Rambo' and Dated '18', this oil on canvas was almost certainly painted in 1918, by Jules Rambo. It depicts a distinguished gentleman.

ABOUT JULES RAMBO:

Jules Rambo (1896 - 1974) was a painter of landscapes, portraits, figurative pieces and still-life’s. Using an Impressionist technique, yet enlivening his work with Fauvist colours, his heavily applied paint texture makes for an appealing image. Jules was good friends with the sculptor and watercolorist Charles Stepman. A number of major retrospective exhibitions of his work were held in Belgium including one at the Galerij Rubens in Brussels, 1956 in conjunction with the paintings of Gilberte Noyer and others in 1945, 1947 and 1950 at the Galerij De Giroux, also in Brussels.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century European portraiture often features a transition from rigid academic representation to more expressive, painterly techniques. Artists favoured subdued colour palettes, visible impasto brushwork, and psychological depth over formal, stylized idealisation.

These artworks were typically executed using oil-based pigments applied to natural linen or cotton canvas stretched over timber frames. The surrounding frames were often constructed from timber with applied gesso moulding and finished with leaf gilded surfaces.

Authentic period oil paintings demonstrate natural age-related craquelure, subtle oxidisation on the canvas reverse, and period-appropriate timber stretchers. Inspecting signature placement, frame construction, and canvas texture helps confirm age and authenticity.

An antique portrait creates visual interest when layered into modern gallery walls or positioned above key focal points like sideboards and mantels. Pairing dark-toned oil paintings with contemporary furniture adds texture and historical contrast to modern living spaces.

Dust the surface lightly with a clean, soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water. Position the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and excessive humidity to prevent paint cracking or canvas distortion.
