Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French enamelware gained widespread popularity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as durable domestic kitchenware. Production flourished in regions such as Northern France, where manufacturers produced glazed iron pitchers, pots, and canisters designed for daily household tasks.

These items were manufactured from stamped sheet iron or heavy steel, which was dipped or sprayed with powdered glass glaze before being fired at high temperatures. Accents were often added using stencil patterns, transfer printing, or hand-painted gilding.

Authentic period pieces display considerable weight due to the underlying iron construction and feature natural enamel loss along high-wear edges, revealing dark oxidised metal underneath. Genuine items often feature distinct seam lines, hand-applied gilt trim, or embossed body details.

Enamel pitchers serve as excellent vessels for tall floral arrangements, dried botanical stems, or kitchen utensils. Placing the piece on a dining table, kitchen island, or windowsill introduces textural contrast and vintage character to modern spaces.

Wipe the surface gently using a soft cloth, warm water, and mild dish soap while avoiding abrasive pads that scratch the enamel. To prevent rust from forming along exposed metal edges, ensure the vessel is dried thoroughly after cleaning or holding liquid.
