Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the late 18th century, an etagere is a light furniture piece featuring open shelves or tiers designed to display small ornaments, porcelain, or books. Popularised during the Louis XV and Napoleon III eras, these tables provided both decorative flair and portable functionality for refined drawing rooms.

French marquetry furniture typically features a carcass of oak or pine veneered with fine woods such as mahogany, rosewood, or kingwood. Decorative floral or geometric motifs are created using contrasting wood veneers, often accented with cast brass or gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts and galleries.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut timber veneers with slight irregularities, visible dovetail joinery, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Genuine gilt bronze mounts show signs of hand-chiselling, secondary oxidisation on the reverse side, and are fitted with period-appropriate threaded screws or pins rather than modern fasteners.

A tiered etagere functions well as an accent piece beside an armchair, within a hallway, or in a reading alcove. Its compact footprint and open structure allow it to hold contemporary art glass, small desk accessories, or books while adding historical contrast to clean-lined modern spaces.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and humidity fluctuations to prevent veneer lifting. Clean surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth, apply high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the timber grain annually, and dust the gilt bronze mounts with a soft dry brush without chemical polishes.
