Neoclassical Brass and Black Column Standard Lamp with Adjustable Stem

19th century
Description

An imposing and finely executed neoclassical standard lamp, crafted in a striking combination of polished brass and contrasting black column, raised on a substantial square plinth base. The stepped base is crisply tiered and set on finely cast paw feet with scrolling acanthus detail, giving the piece both visual weight and sculptural definition. The faces of the upper plinth are adorned with applied laurel wreath mounts, carefully chased to stand in subtle relief against the highly polished brass ground.

From the architectural base rises a fluted black column shaft, providing a strong vertical emphasis and an elegant contrast to the warm brass mounts. The column is crowned with an ornate Corinthian-inspired capital, richly cast with acanthus leaves and classical ornament. Above this, a turned and reeded brass upper section incorporates an adjustable stem, allowing the overall height of the lamp to be altered to suit different settings and ceiling proportions. The design as a whole reflects neoclassical principles, combining symmetry, disciplined geometry, and Greco-Roman architectural references to create a piece of considerable presence.

The lamp has been professionally rewired and is fitted with a traditional braided cable, sympathetic to its period-inspired character while ensuring modern practicality. Converted for electricity.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical lighting incorporates structural elements inspired by classical Greek and Roman architecture, such as fluted columns, Corinthian capitals, stepped pedestal bases, and symmetrical motifs.

These lamps typically feature cast or turned solid brass, dark enamelled metal shafts, bronzed accents, and heavy weighted bases designed for stability.

Authentic pieces feature detailed metal castings, natural surface patination, substantial weight in the base, and historically correct fittings or adjustment mechanisms.

Position the lamp alongside a reading armchair or within a living room corner to provide height and ambient lighting while balancing modern soft furnishings.

Dust metal components regularly with a soft dry cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners that damage original surface lacquers, and gently brush fabric shades to remove loose particles.
