Allegorical bronze putti became highly popular during the French Rococo and Neoclassical periods, notably championed by sculptors such as Claude Michel (known as Clodion). These figures frequently depicted winged or unwinged child figures representing seasons, harvests, or classical mythology, designed as refined tabletop and mantel decorations for aristocrats.

Late 19th-century bronze putti were cast using the lost-wax or sand-casting methods, featuring hand-chased surface details to define hair, drapery, and textures. They were finished with dark or warm chemical patinas and typically mounted onto polished marble or gilt-bronze bases for stability and display.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit crisp detail in hand-chased areas such as fingers and faces, accompanied by natural age-related patina in recessed areas. Inspecting the underside reveals historic casting techniques, threaded assembly rods, and period-appropriate marble bases with subtle hand-cut edge wear.

Bronze putti serve as classical accents when placed symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, flanked by contemporary art or mirrors. They can also be styled atop a stack of design books on a sideboard or desk to introduce visual texture and historical depth to contemporary rooms.

Maintain bronze sculptures by dusting them regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush. Apply a micro-crystalline wax sparingly to the bronze to protect the patina, and clean marble bases using a damp cloth, avoiding acidic cleaners that damage the stone.
