Hyacinthe Rigaud (Circle), Portrait of a Member of the Greder Family - Antique Oil Painting

17th century
For Sale by Brave Fine Art
Description

This fine late 17th-century oil painting by an artist working in the circle of French painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743) depicts a distinguished member of the Greder family of Solothurn, one of the most prominent dynasties in the Swiss Confederation during the age of Louis XIV.

Attired in a full periwig and long white bands over a black robe, here we see a gentleman associated with civic, legal, or administrative office. It's a sober portrayal, emphasising dignity and introspection.

The Greder family - often referred to as 'Greder von Wartenfels' - occupied a position of exceptional influence in Solothurn from the 17th century onward. As members of the ruling patriciate, they served repeatedly as councillors (Grossräte), landvögte (bailiffs), military commanders, and diplomatic intermediaries.

Solothurn itself held a unique role geopolitically: as an ambassadorial seat of France to the Swiss Confederation. Many Greder men entered French service, rising to high rank in Swiss regiments under the French crown while simultaneously maintaining civic authority at home.

Within this historical framework, the present portrait likely represents a Greder family member active during the transitional decades around 1700 - a period in which civic office and international military service were often intertwined. In cities such as Solothurn, portrait galleries of leading families reinforced political legitimacy.

Stylistically, the controlled modelling of the face, the subdued tonal harmonies, and the restrained yet confident brushwork align with the oeuvre of Hyacinthe Rigaud, whose formula for dignified male portraiture became widely influential in the late 17th century. Several of the Greder family sat for Rigaud, though the present work is best understood as executed within his circle rather than by the master’s own hand.

While the precise identity of the individual cannot be confirmed, the heraldry in the upper right is associated with the Greder family, and thus secures the dynastic context.

In its quiet authority, the portrait captures the character of a ruling citizen - a man whose influence lay within council chambers, administrative courts, and the complex networks binding Switzerland to France at the dawn of the 18th century.

A wonderful survivor.

Held in a modern gilded frame in the late 17th-century Baroque taste with a deep moulded profile and richly modelled foliate ornament. The corners and centres are emphasised with scrolling acanthus and shell motifs in higher relief, while the intermediate sections carry flowing strapwork and floral carving.

French Baroque portraiture, prominent during the 17th and early 18th centuries under the reign of Louis XIV, focuses on grand, formal depictions of royalty, nobility, and scholars. Characteristics include dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, solemn expressions, voluminous wigs, intricate garments, and occasional coat-of-arms heraldry.

Artisans during the Baroque period painted primarily using hand-ground mineral pigments mixed with linseed or walnut oil onto stretched linen canvas. Frames were typically crafted from hand-carved timber coated in gesso and finished with applied gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period portraits exhibit natural age-related craquelure across the paint surface, historic canvas stretching methods, and dark oxidisation on the timber stretcher bars. The reverse often shows hand-carved joinery on the frame along with natural wear to the gilding.

Hang the dark portrait as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or within a paneled study wall. Surrounding the piece with neutral contemporary furnishings or dark wood joinery highlights the deep tones and gilded detail of the frame.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can strip original gilding or varnish.
