Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular in the mid-19th century, Victorian papier-mache chairs are decorative accent seats crafted from molded paper pulp mixed with adhesive, mounted on wood frames, and finished with black varnish, gilding, and shell inlays.

Craftsmen layered paper pulp and glue over wooden or wire formers, baked the structure until hardened, and applied multiple layers of black asphaltum lacquer before adding painted gilt ornament and mother-of-pearl inlays.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-laid nacre or mother-of-pearl decoration, hand-painted gold leaf embellishments, woven cane or original textile seats, and natural age-related crazing within the black lacquer finish.

Position the chair as an accent piece in a bedroom, dressing room, or entrance hall alongside modern artwork to contrast its traditional silhouette and detailed black lacquer work.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfiber cloth and avoid moisture or chemical solvents. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the lacquer from cracking or the shell inlays from lifting.
