Royal Worcester Porcelain Jardinière of a Girl at Rustic Fence, James Hadley, 1888

19th century
Description

A fine Royal Worcester antique figural jardinière dated 1888, modelled by James Hadley as a young country girl seated beside a tall rustic fence forming a circular flower holder. Conceived as both sculpture and functional display piece, this form represents some of Worcester’s most ambitious late Victorian modelling.

The surface is finished in Worcester’s soft ivory and blush palette, enriched with gently shaded enamels that bring depth to the drapery and exceptional delicacy to the facial features. The textured rustic base and woven fence are particularly well executed, giving the piece strong presence while remaining graceful.

The base carries the Royal Worcester impressed mark with puce date code for 1888 alongside Hadley’s signature. Fence-enclosed Worcester figural jardinières are consistently among the most valuable and desirable sculptural models produced by the factory.

Dimensions: Height 18 cm; width 21 cm; depth 18 cm. Weight: 956 g.

Condition: Excellent antique condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the late nineteenth century, Royal Worcester blush ivory porcelain features soft satin-finish glazes in muted ivory, pink, and beige tones. These pieces were often decorated with delicate hand-painted florals, relief moulding, and highlighted with burnished gilt details influenced by the Aesthetic Movement.

Victorian jardinieres were typically constructed from fine porcelain or earthenware using multi-part slip-casting techniques. The cast pieces were assembled, fired, glazed, and painted by hand before undergoing final firings for gilded trim and enamel detailing.

Authentic items bear the printed Royal Worcester standard mark, which includes a crowned circle motif with letters or dots indicating the year of manufacture. Impressed shape numbers, registration marks, and occasional modeller signatures, such as James Hadley, further confirm authenticity.

A figurative porcelain jardiniere functions as a sculptural centrepiece on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece. To protect the original interior glaze from moisture, it should be displayed empty or styled with dried botanicals rather than planted directly with soil and live roots.

Dust the item regularly with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid immersing the piece in water or applying abrasive chemicals, as harsh cleaning can erode delicate gilded accents and cold-painted enamel details.
