Description

A rare large-scale Sunderland lustre jug from the early 1800s, made in pearlware and decorated with overglaze transfer printing enhanced by hand painting and vivid pink metallic lustre with splash marbling. The decoration combines a maritime ship scene with traditional folk sailor blessing verses: “From Rocks & Sands And every ill May God preserve The Sailor still” and “We sailors are born for all weathers, Great guns let them blow high or low, Our duty keeps us in our tethers, And where the gale drives we must go”, long circulated among seafaring families as protective talismans.

Exceptionally oversized for the type, this jug far exceeds standard domestic Sunderland examples and represents a genuine rarity. Fine glaze craquelure is present and entirely consistent with age. The lustre remains strong and visually striking.
