Sunderland Lustre Jug in Pearlware with Poetic Panel, C. 1800–1820

Description

A genuine early 19th-century English Sunderland lustre jug, executed in pearlware with overglaze transfer decoration enhanced by hand-painted enamels and pink-purple metallic lustre. The distinctive marbled splash effect was achieved by oil droplets applied to the lustred glaze before firing.

The decoration combines a commemorative architectural scene with the poetic subject “The Sailor’s Farewell”, a theme closely linked to Sunderland’s shipbuilding heritage.

The robust rounded form with tall neck, pronounced spout and strong handle reflects the typical domestic jugs of the period. Fine glaze craquelure across the surface is entirely consistent with early English ceramics.

Sunderland lustre pottery has become increasingly collectible, particularly well-preserved pink lustre examples.

Condition:

Two small rim chips on the spout and one small chip on the footrim. Otherwise in excellent condition, with no cracks or restorations and with strong surviving lustre and clear transfer decoration.

Sunderland lustreware refers to lead-glazed earthenware produced predominantly in the North East of England during the nineteenth century, characterised by its distinctive metallic pink, purple, or copper iridescent glaze decorations, often applied using a mottled or splash technique.
