William IV Circular Rosewood Dining Table

18th century
Description

William IV Circular Rosewood Dining Table with Bird’s Eye Maple Block, c.1835

________________________________________

William IV Circular Rosewood Dining Table

An exceptional William IV circular rosewood dining table, dating to circa 1835, showcasing the bold scale and refined craftsmanship characteristic of the period. The magnificent circular top is veneered in beautifully figured rosewood, displaying dramatic grain patterns and rich tonal variation that create a striking visual centrepiece.

The table is raised on a substantial turned central column, standing on elegant carved scroll feet. Of particular note is the contrasting bird’s eye maple block positioned beneath the top on the column — a premium timber detail rarely found on standard pieces. The use of bird’s eye maple not only enhances the aesthetic contrast but is also a clear indicator of superior cabinetmaking quality and expense at the time of manufacture.

The generous 134cm diameter comfortably accommodates six diners or more, making it ideal as a dining table or statement centre table. With its superb colour, outstanding figuring, and quality construction, this is a distinguished example of early 19thc. rosewood furniture.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Transitioning between the Regency and early Victorian eras, William IV furniture (18301837) features robust proportions, bold classical lines, and prominent carving such as lotus leaves, scrolls, and heavy pedestal bases.

These tables commonly utilise solid or veneered rosewood with vibrant grain patterns, often resting on a central pedestal column with a tri-form base and hand-carved scroll feet.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit rich, dark timber with distinctive dark streaks and swirling grain, hand-cut joinery, original brass tilt-top latching mechanisms beneath the tabletop, and historic patination.

Pair the table with contemporary dining chairs or minimalist pendant lighting to create architectural contrast against the deep timber tones and detailed pedestal carving.

Protect the timber surface from direct sunlight and moisture, dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a quality beeswax polish sparingly in line with the wood grain.
