Antique Solid Silver Novelty Pin Cushion - Goblet

1900 - 1920
Description

This is unusual - a solid sterling silver novelty pin cushion, fashioned as a goblet or chalice.

It is hallmarked on the side of the main body for Birmingham, possibly 1919, although the date mark is somewhat rubbed. The maker's mark is for E J Houlston Ltd.

It looks to be the original cushion, slightly faded around the edges. It stands well on a quality leather base and has a few small dings around the body, but nothing more than one would expect from an item of this age.

Dimensions:

Height: 5cm

Diameter of top: 4cm

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Novelty pin cushions crafted from silver became highly popular in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain as decorative yet functional sewing accessories and collectables.

These items were typically constructed with a hallmarked sterling silver or silver-plated base, fitted with a padded velvet or plush textile cushion insert.

Authentic silver pieces feature British hallmarks stamped along the rim or base stem, indicating the maker, silver purity standard, assay office, and date letter.

Position the piece on an office desk, writing bureau, or curated bookshelf alongside other small desktop antiques to add historical texture.

Gently buff the silver surface using a soft silver polishing cloth while keeping liquid polish away from the fabric cushion to avoid staining or moisture damage.
