A Pair of Bronze and Ivory Figures by Gotthilf Jaeger, the Falconer and the Casket Bearer

1900 - 1920
Description

This fine pair of early 20th-century bronze and ivory figures depicts a young man and woman, one as the falconer and the other as the gift bearer. They are both beautifully sculpted and cast with exceptional detail.

The bronze elements are finished in silver and cold painted in black. The heads of both figures and one hand on the falconer are exquisitely hand carved in ivory.

The figures are mounted onto bronze and turned marble circular plinths.

Both figures are signed by the artist and have the foundry mark R.U.M. for Rosenthal and Meader who worked producing these and similar fine pieces until 1929, when they were taken over by Preiss and Kassler.

This fine pair of Art Deco period silvered bronze and ivory figures are the work of a master sculptor and cast by a leading foundry. They are both in excellent condition.

Each figure measures approximately:

Height 27.5cm x width 13cm x depth 9cm

Gotthilf Jaeger was a sculptor in Berlin (1871 Cologne - 1933 Berlin).

The artist studied at the Academy in Karlsruhe, Volz and Städel Institute Frankfurt / Main at home. Jaeger was also a teacher at the School of Applied Arts Pforzheim.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chryselephantine sculptures are figurative works constructed using a combination of cast metal, typically bronze, and carved ivory or bone for exposed areas like faces and hands. Popularised during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, these statues often featured intricate surface detail and contrast between metallic garments and smooth carved skin.

These figures were primarily cast in bronze, which was frequently silvered, gilt, or cold-painted, and paired with hand-carved elephant ivory or bone accents. The finished statuettes were generally mounted on stone or polished marble bases, such as onyx or verd antique.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp casting details, natural age-related patina on the metalwork, and fine hair-line striations known as Schreger lines in the carved ivory parts. Foundry marks, signatures cast into the base or bronze, and correct proportions consistent with early 20th-century German or French sculptors also assist verification.

Place pairs or single figures on structured architectural surfaces like a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or lit display cabinet. Their rich metallic contrast and sculptural profiles provide visual balance alongside contemporary artwork and minimalist stone finishes.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent dirt accumulation in fine details. Keep the sculptures away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity, as moisture fluctuations can cause the organic carved components to crack or discolour over time.
