Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cape Dutch furniture originated during the 18th and 19th centuries in southern Africa, blending European furniture traditions with indigenous timber construction. Key characteristics include sturdy square-section legs, mortise and tenon joinery, and decorative cutout or pierced motifs on crest rails.

Local hardwoods such as stinkwood, yellowwood, and stinkwood variants were commonly utilized alongside woven leather thongs (known as riempies) or cane to construct lightweight, durable seats suited to regional climates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-saw marks, irregular peg joinery, natural wear around the lower stretchers, and original patina on unvarnished surfaces. Seat openings typically show historical attachment points for thonging or weaving.

Position the piece as a singular accent chair in a hallway, pair it with a contemporary writing desk, or group similar regional country chairs around a neutral dining table to add architectural texture.

Keep the wood hydrated using a natural beeswax polish applied along the grain, and avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or near forced-air heating sources to prevent timber cracking or drying of the woven seat.
