Early Victorian Flame Mahogany Circular Bedside Cabinet

19th century
Description

A fine early Victorian cylindrical bedside or occasional cabinet, constructed in richly figured mahogany and retaining its original white marble inset top. The piece is of elegant drum form, the vertical body veneered in beautifully matched flame mahogany with a warm, honeyed patina that highlights the natural movement and depth of the grain. The cylindrical outline is accentuated by a boldly moulded top and plinth base, creating a balanced and architecturally confident silhouette.

The top is fitted with a circular white marble panel, neatly recessed within a substantial moulded mahogany surround. The marble displays gentle age-related marking consistent with use, complementing the character of the timber. The body is enclosed by a single curved door, seamlessly integrated into the drum form and fitted with a simple white ceramic knob and brass collar. When opened, the door reveals a well-proportioned interior fitted with a fixed circular shelf, providing practical storage while maintaining the cabinet’s clean external lines.

The cabinet stands on a stepped circular plinth base that mirrors the moulded top, grounding the design and reinforcing its symmetrical form.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Circular pot cupboards were designed in the early 19th century as discreet bedroom furniture used to house chamber pots before modern indoor plumbing was widely introduced.

These cabinets were typically built using a solid timber frame layered with decorative flame mahogany veneers, often topped with an inset marble disc and finished with ceramic or brass knobs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned mouldings, thick cut veneers with distinct flame figure graining, original porcelain or turned wooden door handles, and hand-fitted interior shelving.

A circular mahogany cabinet functions well as a nightstand alongside modern upholstered beds, or placed next to an armchair as a compact side table with contemporary lighting.

Dust mahogany timber regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly; clean inset marble using a damp cloth with mild soap, avoiding acidic cleaning products.
