This high-quality Edwardian Open Bookcase, dating to circa 1910, was retailed by the firm Lee, Longland & Co.. Based on the label found on the reverse, the piece originated from their landmark premises at 304, 305, 306 Broad St., Birmingham, where they operated as ''Artistic House Furnishers''.
Construction & Design
The piece is crafted from quality oak, featuring a shaped gallery top with a distinctive central stylized cut-out. In good used condition and carrying the marks of age and character.
• Shelf Specification: It contains three adjustable shelves. The shelf supports have a little extra wrapping on them to make sure they slot firmly into the holes;

• Rear Panel: The bookcase retains its original plywood back, a material prized during the Edwardian pe
...riod for its resistance to shrinkage and splitting.
• Storage: The open-front design provides four levels of easily accessible storage space.
Retailer History: Lee, Longland & Co.
Founded in 1902 by Robert Lee and George Longland, the company became one of the most respected furniture retailers in the West Midlands. By 1910, they had established themselves as purveyors of ''Artistic'' furniture, moving away from heavy Victorian styles toward the cleaner, more refined lines of the Edwardian and Arts & Crafts movements. This bookcase is a prime example of the understated elegance that defined their early 20th-century inventory.
