Pair of Monumental Gilt Brass Andirons

19th century
Description

A striking and architecturally scaled pair of gilt brass andirons, executed in a bold neoclassical taste and notable for their sculptural presence and refined casting. The design is composed of stacked, turned spherical elements rising in graduated form, surmounted by a lidded finial with ring-molded detail. The burnished globes exhibit a rich, warm patina, with subtle surface variations consistent with age and polishing.

Each andiron is constructed with a prominent central shaft supporting two large, highly polished spheres divided by a crisply turned baluster-form knop. The upper sphere is capped by a domed, ringed lid and compressed finial, reinforcing the verticality of the form and lending a classical urn-like silhouette.

The bases are particularly expressive, cast in high relief with heraldic and figural ornament. A crowned female masque—evocative of Renaissance or Baroque allegorical imagery—anchors the central apron. The surrounding ground is textured with a cross-hatched diaper pattern and flanked by fleur-de-lis motifs, suggesting French influence. The shaped feet terminate in scrolling supports with rosette roundels at either end, providing both visual weight and stability. The stepped plinth above the base transitions cleanly into the baluster stem.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Andirons, also known as fire dogs, are horizontal brackets used in pairs to hold logs above the floor of a fireplace, improving airflow to support cleaner combustion.

Historical andirons typically feature cast iron billets designed to withstand high heat, paired with polished brass, bronze, or copper decorative front uprights.

Authentic examples often exhibit hand-cast seam lines, central threaded iron rods securing the turned brass components, and natural wear or oxidation on unexposed surfaces.

These decorative metal supports can be placed inside an active or decommissioned open fireplace opening to introduce structural height, historical texture, and metallic tones.

Clean the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth to remove dust or soot, and apply a specialized metal cleaner to unlacquered brass to remove tarnish when necessary.
