Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French hall lanterns from this period typically feature openwork metal frames, cast gilded brass or bronze mounts, and curved glass panels designed to shield flame light sources from draughts. Architectural influence often dictated their form, displaying scrollwork, urns, or Neo-Classical motifs popular during the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras.

Traditional construction involved cast or stamped brass, gilt bronze (ormolu), or wrought iron frames paired with hand-blown or blown-moulded clear glass panels. Internal fixtures featured brass candle arms or central stems, often fitted with drip pans and ceramic or painted candle sleeves.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut glass with slight optical distortions, air bubbles, or subtle colour variations, alongside hand-chased metalwork and original surface gilding or natural patination. Look for signs of historic wiring conversions, hand-cut screw threads, and minor wear near mounting joints and rim latches.

Position the lantern in transitional spaces such as an entrance foyer, stairwell, or high-ceilinged corridor to create a defined focal point. Pair the warm metallic finish with neutral wall tones or wood panelling to highlight the architectural silhouette of the metal frame.

Dust the metalwork gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that can strip historic gilding or lacquer. Clean the glass panels using a mild mixture of water and gentle soap applied with a lightly damp cloth, ensuring liquid does not seep into electrical fittings.
