Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the French word for torch, a torchere was initially designed to elevate candelabras or oil lamps to illuminate rooms. By the late 19th century, torcheres evolved into tall decorative pedestals used to display indoor plants, terracotta urns, marble busts, and porcelain vases.

Victorian torcheres were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak. Cabinetmakers utilized hand-turned columns, hand-carved classical details like fluting and acanthus leaves, and heavy weighted bases to support substantial items.

Authentic 19th-century examples display natural patination, timber shrinkage lines, and hand-cut joinery underneath the base. The weight of genuine dense mahogany, along with carved elements showing minor variations from hand tools, distinguishes original pieces from modern reproductions.

A tall wooden pedestal adds vertical height and architectural structure to a room layout. It serves as a focal point in corners or alcoves when used to display modern ceramics, trailing houseplants, or abstract bronze sculptures.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the direction of the wood grain, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct exposure to radiators or direct sunlight.
