Spelter, known in France as regule, is a zinc-based alloy that became popular during the nineteenth century as an accessible alternative to cast bronze. French sculptors, including members of the Moreau family, designed figurative spelter works depicting classical, genre, and allegorical subjects for domestic interiors.

These figures were cast using a soft zinc metal alloy poured into detailed moulds. Once cast, the surface was patinated, bronzed, or chemically oxidised to mimic cast bronze, then mounted onto turned wooden, marble, or slate bases.

Authentic period spelter feels significantly lighter and cooler to the touch than bronze, with subtle casting seam lines visible upon close inspection. Original pieces often feature incised artist signatures, stamped foundry marks, or attached brass title plates on the frontal base.

Pair of statues work effectively when styled symmetrically, such as flanking a mantle mirror, positioning on either end of a sideboard, or placing within structured bookshelf alcoves to add classical structure and metallic depth.
