Dresden porcelain refers to hard-paste ceramics decorated in or near Dresden, Germany, beginning in the nineteenth century. Carl Thieme established the Saxonian Porcelain Manufactory in Potschappel near Dresden in 1872, producing elaborate hand-painted porcelain pieces.

Dresden sugar boxes are manufactured from high-fired hard-paste porcelain. The surfaces are finished with a clear glaze, hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration, applied relief elements such as foliage or twig handles, and gilded rims.
