Description

An impressive Royal Worcester sculptural porcelain pair depicting musicians in Renaissance costume, designed by James Hadley and produced in the early twentieth century. The mandolin player and the Blind Whistler form a balanced and expressive decorative composition intended for prominent interior display.

The figures are finished in exclusive shot enamel with subtle gilding, a demanding technique reserved for Worcester’s highest-quality works. The process required flawless enamel application and resulted in a high rejection rate, making such pieces costly to produce and strictly limited in number. It was typically employed for exhibition, presentation and prestige productions.

Original Royal Worcester crown marks with date dots confirm manufacture in 1912 and 1914. Pairs surviving in this finish are now rarely encountered, particularly in such preserved condition.
