An exceptional and monumental pair of late 19th-century Japanese vases dating to the Meiji period. Conceived as statement pieces for grand Victorian interiors, their impressive 47.5 cm stature and complex twin-handled form create immediate architectural presence.

The decorative scheme is executed in high-relief Moriage, featuring Scholars in a landscape. The technical quality of the raised “beaded” enamel work is superb, producing a richly textured surface that demonstrates the immense time and skill invested by the makers. The figures are boldly modelled, giving sculptural depth and movement to the composition.

Unlike many export examples of the era, this pair displays a sophisticated and restrained palette. The interplay of light and dark greens, turquoise, and azure blue against a cream ground creates a refined and expensive aesthetic. The overall effect is both decorative and authoritative, allowing the vases to function as focal points within a period or contemporary interior.
