Early 20th Century Singer Cast Iron & Elm Industrial Chair C.1930

1920 - 1940
Description

An early 20th century industrial Singer machinist’s chair with a solid, finely contoured elm seat below an adjustable thick ply backrest, all raised on a tapering heavy cast iron pedestal base marked “SINGER” to each side.

The seat swivels to raise or lower height, and locks firmly in position via the wing screw, making it a practical occasional chair with real presence and strong industrial character. A particularly good original example.

Very good condition with surface wear and patina to the metalwork consistent with age and use. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1930.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An industrial machinist chair is an adjustable, durable seat designed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for factory workers, draughtsmen, and seamstresses to ensure ergonomic positioning during prolonged labour.

Factory seating from this era typically featured heavy cast iron or tubular steel bases combined with hard-wearing solid hardwoods such as elm, oak, or beech for the seat and backrest.

Authentic Singer seating features embossed manufacturer lettering on the cast iron base, a threaded steel central spindle for height adjustment, and robust wood components displaying natural wear consistent with industrial use.

An industrial machinist chair works well as an accent seat alongside a contemporary home office desk, at a kitchen island, or placed in a studio space to introduce historical texture and functional design.

Clean the wood with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax to nourish the timber, while keeping cast iron free from moisture and occasionally treating it with microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidisation.
