Transfer-printed pottery is produced by applying an engraved copperplate design onto paper and transferring the wet cobalt ink onto unglazed earthenware before final glazing and firing. This technique allowed intricate oriental and chinoiserie designs to be produced in Great Britain throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Victorian ceramic ladles were typically fashioned from earthenware or pearlware, finished with an underglaze cobalt blue transfer print and a clear protective glaze. Long handles were molded separately and joined to the bowl prior to firing.

Authentic nineteenth-century ceramic ladles display underglaze cobalt transfer patterns with subtle seam joins along the handle. They often show glaze crazing, minor stilt marks from the kiln, and natural wear along the rim and reverse hook.
