Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau metalwork emerged between 1890 and 1910, marked by a departure from historicist revival styles in favour of organic, flowing forms inspired by nature. Fireplace fenders from this era transformed utilitarian hearth protection into sculptural decorative features, utilising brass and copper to craft sinuous whiplash motifs.

Late Victorian and Art Nouveau fire fenders were predominantly crafted from solid brass, cast iron, or sheet copper. Construction often combined tubular brass top rails, cast corner elements, turned balusters, and a heavy sheet metal or cast base to provide stability along the hearth.

Authentic pieces display distinct stylised curves, asymmetrical botanical motifs, or geometric whiplash lines typical of the turn-of-the-century period. Original items generally feature hand-finished casting marks, authentic patina or oxidisation in non-polished crevices, and historic joinery methods such as square-headed nuts or peened rivets.

A period brass fender can be placed on a brick, tile, or stone hearth to frame modern log burners or open fireplaces. The metallic tone provides visual contrast against darker hearth materials and complements both traditional period properties and contemporary minimalist interiors.

Un-lacquered brass requires gentle dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth. To remove tarnish, use a dedicated brass polish applied sparingly with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive pads that can scratch the metal surface, or leave the metal unpolished to retain its natural aged patina.
