FAQs

French faience refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in France from the late sixteenth century onwards. The opaque white glaze provided a backdrop for intricate hand-painted designs inspired by Italian maiolica and Chinese porcelain.

Faience tureens are crafted from refined earthenware clay coated with a tin oxide glaze. Decoration is painted onto the raw glaze or fired en grand feu or petit feu using metallic oxides such as cobalt blue, copper green, and manganese purple.

Authentic pieces feature characteristic weight, subtle imperfections in the glaze, glaze chips revealing reddish earthenware beneath, and stilt marks on the base from kiln firing. Hand-painted brushwork and regional maker marks also confirm origin.
